Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the world’s most common and costly occupational illness and according to the World Health Organization (WHO) its incidence is on the increase. It is an illness that is both incurable, and most importantly, preventable. For many years Health and Safety regulations in the world’s most advanced economies have stipulated hearing protection requirements for workers who are exposed to high noise environments. Despite these regulations, the incidences of NIHL and costly hearing loss claims have been on the increase.
Existing hearing protectors provide an inadequate last line of defence solution to hearing loss prevention. Studies have shown that noise-exposed workers do not consistently use hearing protection if:
- The protectors lessen the wearer’s ability to communicate in high noise environments.
- The protectors interfere with job performance and productivity by making certain sounds from machinery undetectable.
- The protectors introduce safety issues, such as when the wearer is not being able to hear warning sounds.
A recent study by NIOSH in the USA found that the top reason for not wearing hearing protection was that “it interfered with communication”. It is common practice for workers who need to communicate in high noise environments to take off their protection
to have conversations with fellow workers which expose them to damaging noise levels.
Another reason why users may not consistently wear hearing protection devices is that the job may require them to hear the sounds of properly functioning machinery or there may be a need to have situational awareness and the ability to hear warning sounds and signals.
